Recently, I went on a break with my partner to visit her family out of state here in Australia. This was an important break as it had come off the back of a particularly intense period at work. In the lead-up to that, I was considering what watch to take. For many of us, this will be a familiar process. Let me outline my thinking, where I got to in the end, and why.It features a quick-set link date, a blacked-out rotor with pink text, and a bright pink column wheel that suits the watch's overall aesthetic nicely. The dial is framed by a black chapter ring which creates a neat infinity effect where the grooved lines feed into the flange and then disappear. Everything under the crystal is a real masterclass in monochromatic contrast. You don't often see all-black markers on a watch dial – especially applied markers, but they help create a nice balance between the white and black tones.

The Navitimer Rattrapante is the latest addition link and it was released earlier this year at Baselworld. It features both a take on the original Navitimer dial and a split-seconds chronograph function and is the first time that the manufacture has made this complication entirely in-house. You may recall the Duograph from Breitling, a split-seconds chronograph from the 1940s, and this watch is now very collectible, so it is nice to see Breitling referring back to its heritage. The symbol of the power of Fossil marketing was its tin packages. In 1989 Fossil began selling watches in tin boxes decorated with 1950s-style images. Consumers loved them and started collecting them. Fossil eventually posted a “History of Famous Fossil Tins” on its website, where it noted “The tin is almost as important as the watch we put inside.”I happen to quite like the current Polo Date 36mm with diamond indices. Its smooth, curved profile sits elegantly on the wrist. It's subtle in size but sporty in feel. And I'll gladly admit that now that it comes without diamonds, I like it even better. The Citizen, in a limited run of just 350 pieces, slots into the very near top of the brand's pricing structure at $3,800 and represents Citizen's prowess with high-accuracy quartz watchmaking. This is the sort of watch that is meant to compete with the likes of Grand Seiko and while many might scoff at such a price for quartz, you must understand that this is where Citizen excels, and with a watch like this, you're getting the best of the best.

Today’s Citizen Seven Star APSS 52904-Y was born way back in 1968 and was available in a variety of dial colors – the orange you see here, blue, silver, red, and black. They carefully selected top grain, aniline, lightweight steer hid126710BLRORolex novelties are always one of, if not, the most anticipated timepieces of the Baselworld show. The LE ditches the grass and snowflakes for a more luxe effect. From the bezel numerals to the dial text, everything here is done in a rosy gilt coloration. It shares the same visual dial pattern as the green model. It features a two-tone, rose gold and steel bezel with the same black ceramic bezel insert found on the green model. The dial is grey, though you could very well mistake it link for brown in certain lighting conditions. As an avid fan and collector of watches from America's horological heyday, you'll find me in the audience at Saturday's panel, moderated by HODINKEE alumna and Parchie founder Cara Barrett, and featuring actor, horologist, and friend-of-HODINKEE Aldis Hodge and vintage dealer Eric Wind discussing grass-roots attempts at reviving watchmaking in the United States.
